Street scene in Seoul, Korea, July 5, 1931 as mob began attack on Chinese homes and shops in retaliation for an attempt made by Chinese farmers to drive about 200 Koreans from Wanpaoshan, Manchuria, where they had built an irrigation dam under Japanese supervision. The Koreans leased the rice fields from Chinese landlords against the wishes of the 500 Chinese peasants who tried to drive the Koreans from the country. In the Manchurian fighting a score or more Koreans were injured. A few days after the Wanpaoshan incident, the Koreans in Seoul and other Korean towns began attacking the Chinese residents.
