The crater floor is a popular tourist attraction, it has many fumaroles and mud pools. The vapors have been used for medical purposes since Roman times. Italy is one of the most highly exposed countries to volcanic risk. The Neapolitan area in particular, with the two active explosive volcanoes of Vesuvio and Phlegraean Fields, as well as the volcanic island of Ischia, is the highest volcanic risk region in Italy and indeed one of the highest in the world . The Metropolitan City of Napoli, with more than 3 million people and a population density of about 2,700 inhabitants/km?, is one of the most famous examples of Cities on Volcanoes. Despite the proximity to the three active volcanoes, the volcanic risk perception of the Neapolitan resident population is still quite low.
