Gulf of Mexico - 12/13/2016 - An employee works on the drilling deck at the top of the Mars platform. For the current project, 95 foot pipes are linked end to end to extend over 20,000 ft. beneath the surface of the water. Mars is a permanent offshore drilling and production tension-leg oil platform (TLP) operating in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 130 miles southeast of New Orleans. The platform began production on July 8, 1996. It is positioned in a water depth of 896 m (2940 ft) and is designed to produce 220,000 barrels (35,000 m3) of oil and 220 million cubic feet (6,200,000 m3) of gas a day. The Mars platform was built to accommodate a maximum of 180 personnel at a time.
