And it would seem that anticipation is running high; the production, said to have cost $20 million to stage, has already taken nearly as much in advance sales. However, the decision to take the show to New York is something of a risk, something that Elton and Stephen Daldry, who directed both the film and stage show, are aware of. The story of a miner's son who dreams of being a ballet dancer will be acted out by American performers but they will all be using north-eastern English accents. Also, nothing of the politics of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's clash with the miners led by Arthur Scargill has been simplified for New York audiences. Attending the opening night of the play Sir Elton, who wrote the score for the show, along with other Broadway musicals Aida and The Lion King, said that he still found it hard to believe he had become a Broadway hitmaker.
