A kingfisher is spotted in a flash of blue - usually how people briefly see them in the wild as they flash before us. The bird was photographed using special camera techniques of long exposure and carefully timed flash as the photographer waited in a hide near Stamford, Lincolnshire. Julie Yates, 60, said, "The weather was dry and overcast most of the day which is ideal for this technique. There were a pair of kingfishers that were very active around the pond and coming in to feed on a regular basis. The birds were perched and then diving into the pond for fish." "These images were taken using a technique called rear curtain sync, using six flash units to capture the bird in motion as it dives. This technique requires the flash to fire as the shutter closes rather than when the shutter button is pressed." Please byline: Julie Yates/Solent News © Julie Yates/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** I know these are a bit quirky and not to everyone’s taste. But you never know! These were taken at a paid hide near Stamford on Monday. The weather was dry and overcast most of the day which is ideal for this technique. There was a pair of kingfishers that were very active around the pond, and coming in to feed on a regular basis. The birds were perched and then diving into the pond for fish. These images were taken using a technique called rear curtain sync, using 6 flash units to capture the bird in motion as it dives. This technique requires the flash to fire as the shutter closes rather than when the shutter button is pressed. A slow shutter speed of 1/13 was used through the day with aperture and ISO constantly being adjusted as the light changed to ensure the exposure was correct.
