The Land Rover remains the iconic green, UNITED KINGDOM, YOU CAN van life like a trooper in this British Army gunboat that has been lovingly transformed into a living room now for sale on EBay for just Ł26K.
Images show the Land Rover 101 Forward Control 3.5 litre Rover V8 engine, the alternative name of the Land Rover One Tonne, once the pride of the Worcestershire Regiment now in excellent condition, upgraded from its military service into a cosy touring camper that will sleep two.
The vehicle weighs in at a staggering two tonnes with 24 gallons of fuel and can reach up to 65mph which is significantly released to 18mp on rough terrain.
On 5 September 1979 an open 101FC of the Life Guards Regiment carried the coffin of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma from his funeral at Westminster Abbey to Waterloo Station.
According to mediadrumworld.com development of the 101 Forward Control began at the height of the Cold War in 1967, with the truck going into production in 1972.
Great Britain had departed most of its colonies but still maintained a presence on every continent, and faced an entirely new set of future threats.
Conflicts in Indonesia, Oman, and deployments to every imaginable terrain and climate, promised challenges the military couldn’t predict but could only prepare for.
The army’s planners would have had long lists of necessary equipment on them, including a requirement for an off-road vehicle like this gunboat that could tow a 2.5 tonne field gun while carrying one tonne of equipment.
Additionally, the truck had to be convertible to a myriad of uses, including ammo and troop carrying, acting as an ambulance, communications centre, and even a mobile rocket launcher.
External dimensions were strictly limited to just 170” long and 72.5” wide to permit efficient transport in the belly of a cargo plane.
And, of course, the final vehicle needed to be able to actually start up, run, and traverse any country the cargo plane dropped it off.
Given these restrictions, Norman Busby, Land Rover’s designer on the project, recalls how he arrived at the vehicle’s compact 101” wheelbase calculation:
“I sat down and put four British soldiers, 22 inches wide each in,” he said.
"Then a 10-inch-side spare wheel and it left a cab a bit small for the gunners.
"That’s why it’s a little cab!
"We wanted a good departure and approach angle.
"Draw this back down to the ground, draw the wheels in, and you get a 101 inch wheelbase."
This particular Land Rover is on sale with Emri-3038 on Ebay fro Ł26,000.
“Working, Rare Right Hand Drive 101 Forward Control with Original 3.5L V8 Petrol engine.” states the listing.
“We purchased this 101 with the intention of upgrading the conversion that the previous owner had already done.
“Due to work commitments we sadly no longer have the time to complete the project. She is stored indoors and will make a great all-terrain camper or it would be easy to convert back to her original interior.
“This 101 has had a recent overhaul costing over Ł7,000, including: fuel system overhaul, carbs rebuilt, fuel pump, stainless steel fuel tank, brand new brakes front and rear including master and slave cylinders, roof bar and rear ladder fitted (for the intention of sitting at the top when at an event, festival or the beach - you'd get an envious view high up there!).
“It was fitted with a gas hob/grill by the previous owner. The rear body has been lined and the exterior has had a full respray to the bodywork.
