Inside the Great Mosque of Rome. Cristina sits together with other women during the Friday prayer. Women and men are separated. Cristina Tasnim, 50, working as a social worker for a private agency, mainly assisting old people. She also takes care of her seriously ill father and with her mother they all live together in the same house in the Roman suburb of Portuense. She converted to Islam after a long and complex spiritual journey. In fact she's been a Christian but also a Jehovah's Witness. Ties with Islam came during the years of protests with strikes and squatting for housing rights. Many of the protesters where Muslims, among them the person who would become her husband, now ex-husband. Even if he was not favorable, she undertook the Koranic studies and an intense spiritual change ending up in the conversion to Islam. Cristina wears the Hijab and she doesn't care what the old fashioned people of her neighborhood might think. She's not afraid of discrimination or the impact on her daily life. On the contrary, she experienced an increased respect for her person. During her daily job few families asked her not to wear the Hijab. An increasingly high number of Italians are converting to Islam. An estimated 80.000 people have already joined the new religion with a plus 4 . 000 per year . Multiple reasons push italians to undertake the conversion path; these include the disappointment for the Catholic Church , a marriage with a Muslim , cultural attraction for Middle Eastern countries plus an array of social and political ideals . The rules of Islam are hard testing the Italian convert who however identifies values , consistency and motivation in the strict discipline of this religion . Sabrina , Ibrahim and Cristina are three Italian converts that we followed in their daily life , from routine to prayer.
