Wesoły Cmentarz w Rumunii - Redux

In 1935 Ion Stan Patras, a Romanian carpenter, started carving and painting the tombstones of his fellow citizens. Since then the cemetery of Sapanta, a small town on the border between Romania and Ukraine, has turned into a touristic attraction. Patras painted in bright colors life and death of the owner of each tomb, he also wrote verses remembering their lives and habits. Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu visited the cemetery himself and many members of the Communist Party commissioned their tombstone to Patras. At his death in 1977, after producing more than 600 tombs (among which his own), his apprentice Dumitru Pop substituted him in his workshop to keep alive the "Merry Cemetery" as it is called nowadays. As an Eastern European Spoon River the cemetery reveals the stories of those buried into the ground, telling the visitors about virtues and lacks, dreams and desires of those who are "sleeping on the hill".
