REAR ENDED! BUTTING HEADS AND TAILS! A pair of rambunctious white rhinos are seen chasing and playfighting with one another. The calves were spotted running amock in the Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa and despite the play, still packed a punch. Wildlife photographer, Charlie Lynam, 66 said, “This is a family ‘playing’. What fascinated me was how instrumental the horn is in every aspect of their life, status, strength, playing, protection, aggression, etc. not dissimilar to the use of human’s arms.” “When I arrived, the rhinos were already running around and playing. This is not something I had observed before and the interaction lasted over half an hour. Eventually, they calmed down and walked off together peacefully.” Please byline: Charlie Lynam/Solent News © Charlie Lynam/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800 *** Local Caption *** The exact dates and locations the pics were taken please. 23/72020 - Greater Kruger National park What species of Rhino is this? The White Rhino ( which comes from Wide Lipped Rhino) Can you describe what is happening in this sequence? Why were they fighting? Do they have any relation to one another, i.e, possible mates/males fighting over a mate? No - I have see male Rhino’s fighting, it’s viscous, bloody and can result in death. This is a family “playing”. What fascinated me was how instrumental the horn is in every aspect of their life, status, strength, playing, protection, aggression, etc. not dissimilar to the use of human’s arms. I dunno where you wanna go with this story. You probably wish to keep it light? However, for me, it did raise questions over one of the forms of Rhino saving / protection - which is de-horning and how it affects the rhino’s psyche and well being. But I guess that’s the realm of more serious journalism. Can you give us an insight into the moments leading up to this as well as directly after? When I turned up, the rhinos were running around playing. This is not something I have observed before or since I’d say it quite rare - but so are rhino sightings! This went on for over half an hour. Eventually they calmed down and walked off together. Is there any more information you would like us to include? I trust you understand the plight of the rhino being an endangered species and the horrific trade associated with Rhino poaching - it’s effectively a war, with poaching being conducted by ruthless international criminal gangs. There could be any number of strands to this story, from the comedy to the apocalyptic. I feel it is safe to assume nothing has changed for you biographically since the giraffe set..? Yes If you do wish to quote me on any of the above, please let us agree exactly what will be written and in what context.
