Daniel Pardo Rivacoba, from the Assembly of Neighborhoods for the Decline in Tourism, has been actively involved in anti-tourism protests in Barcelona this summer, in Barcelona, Spain, August 31, 2024. Mr. Pardo said Barcelona has become too dependent on tourism, the industry wouldn’t survive without government support. Too many businesses and services are aimed only at tourists and locals needs often go begging. His own shop, Caixa d’Eines i Feines or “library of objects”, is an example of the dwindling number of locally-focused businesses around Barcelona’s popular Santa Caterina market. The shop is a kind of co-operative where people can borrow everything from tools to furniture, vacuum cleaners, and bicycles for a small fee. It’s a rare community enterprise surrounded by fast-food chains.
