Representative Charles B. Rangel, Democrat of New York, at a press conference in Washington on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009. President Barack Obama's speech on health care failed to bridge the gulf with Republicans, but Democrats said on Thursday that the president had largely succeeded in unifying his own party by making a cogent, persuasive pitch to the American public, and by casting his plan to overhaul the health care system as a political and moral imperative. Even some Democrats said that there was still a lot of heavy lifting to do before the legislation will have enough votes to pass. "I don't think he solved a thing in terms of votes," Rangel said of Obama's speech. "I think he did a lot in changing the atmosphere." (Stephen Crowley/The New York Times) 14072011
