Zdzislaw Arlet, director of Fiat's plant in Tychy, Poland in June 2009. "We are lucky there is a crisis," said Arlet. "Everybody wants to build small cars now." For decades, American engineers looking for the secret to small-car success would journey to Japan's Toyota City. These days, they are coming to Tychy. This village set amid the rolling farmland of Silesia is home to Fiat's most advanced factory in Europe, and since the Italian automaker teamed up with Chrysler earlier this year, engineers from Detroit have been making monthly pilgrimages here to eyeball something they can only envy for now: an auto plant that's hiring workers and earning profits.
