Niger president Mamadou Tandja in his office in Niamey, Niger, Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Stubbornness crops up oddly in harsh environments like that of this desert's-edge capital, as in the stoicism of grilled meat vendors in 110-degree heat or the patience of camels bearing heavy reed mats through the dusty streets. So too with the dogged refusal, for over two months now, of the impoverished citizens here to part easily with a commodity as fragile as the tenuous greenery here: democracy. Tens of thousands have taken to the streets to protest Tandja's slow-moving coup d'etat, as his critics call it. (Jacob Silberberg/The New York Times) 14059779
