The front of the Stonewall Inn. Some time after the first night of the uprising, the owners of the club had a string of light bulbs placed over the sign in an attempt to lure customers back -- and perhaps also as a gesture of defiance to the police. The image was shot by Times photographer Larry Morris on the evening of Wednesday, July 2, 1969, five nights after a raid on the Stonewall Inn, a nightclub popular among gay men and lesbians, touched off disturbances which have come to be seen as a defining event in the development of the gay rights movement.
