(NYT12) LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- July 7, 2007 -- UPS-RESEARCH-5 -- Khalil Alhamadani, a shifting unloader who has been with UPS for 11 years, pulls a package container into the sorting facility after it has been lowered from a UPS aircraft in Louisville in June, 2007. United Parcel Service is pumping more than $1 billion a year into high-tech research trying to find services that would appeal to a whole new market, develop new services to offer existing customers and find new ways to wrench costs out of the whole shipping process, even as it increases speed and volume.
