(NYT10) WASHINGTON -- June 5, 2007 -- LIBBY-SENTENCE-5 -- Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald leaves federal court in Washington after I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was sentenced, Tuesday, June 5, 2007. Libby, once one of the most powerful men in government as Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, was sentenced on Tuesday to two and a half years in prison for lying to a grand jury and FBI agents who were investigating the unmasking of a CIA operative during a fierce debate over the war in Iraq. After pronouncing sentence the judge in the case called a short recess to begin addressing the issue of whether Libby's sentence will be suspended while he appeals his conviction. A ruling on that question was not expected Tuesday. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
