(NYT70) ALBANY, N.Y. -- Feb. 5, 2007 -- BKO-CBA-RICHARDSON -- Micheal Ray Richardson, left, the coach of the Albany Patroons, during a game against the Pittsburgh Xplosion in Albany, N.Y., in January 2007. Richardson was the first active player banished by the league. He would like a job as an NBA assistant coach or a scout. The fourth pick in the 1978 draft, Richardson began his career with the Knicks, starting an unlikely path that took him from the University of Montana to status as an NBA All-Star and one of the league's best point guards. Richardson was sent to Golden State before the 1982-83 season and, after 33 games with the Warriors, was traded to the Nets. He was terrific for the Nets, but the game was never a problem for him. Cocaine was. In 1986, after his third positive test for the drug, he was banned by Commissioner David Stern, becoming the first active player banished by the league. (He was later reinstated.)
