(NYT39) WASHINGTON -- Feb. 3, 2007 -- IRAQ-RICE -- Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice takes her seat prior to testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007. For six years, first as national security adviser and then as secretary of state, Rice worked under the cover of a very effective shield: Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who was during that time the administration's lightning rod for criticism over its handling of the Iraq war. But in recent weeks, with Rumsfeld gone, Rice has faced increased, and somewhat unfamiliar, criticism. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)
