*Eds. Retransmission to include date of when plant opened in 1849. -- (NYT32) NEW YORK -- January 22, 2007 -- SUB-PFIZER-LAYOFFS-2 -- The Pfizer plant in the Brooklyn borough of New York, now slated for closure, is pictured on Monday, Jan. 22, 2007. The 600-employee manufacturing plant in Brooklyn is where Pfizer started as a chemical maker in 1849. The drug giant Pfizer said Monday that it would lay off 10,000 workers and close several manufacturing and research sites in an effort to bolster earnings hurt by the loss of patent protection on certain drugs and setbacks in developing new products.
