Ramirez came from Mexico to the United States to make money to send to his wife and children but ended up homeless, confused and ultimately institutionalized for decades in a psychiatric institution in California. Today he is renowned in a slice of the art world for his obsessive, hypnotic drawings and collages evoking his psychological preoccupations and his upbringing in Mexico.
