(NYT20) HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- June 15, 2006 -- OREGON-FRUIT-TRAIL-2 -- The Apple Valley Country Store in Hood River, Ore., sells ice cream and milkshakes as well as various fruit products on Saturday, June 10, 2006. For a weekend trip outside Portland, it is hard to resist the Hood River Fruit Loop, a loosely affiliated network of orchards, produce stands, berry farms and other related businesses in the Hood River Valley. Since the Loop was organized in 1993, it has grown into a popular weekend destination for young families, farmers' market connoisseurs and disciples of the evanescent Rainier cherry.
