(NYT39) BROCKTON, Mass. -- June 15, 2006 -- BBM-ZANY-TEAM -- A sign at the Brockton Rox minor baseball league's home park in Brockton, Mass., on Sunday, May 28, 2006, lets fans know just how far away Cooperstown and Fenway Park are. Among the Rox' multitude of promotions, which are at least wildly idiosyncratic if not fully zany, was a race around the bases between a Little Leaguer starting at home plate, and the pile of rocks. The rocks, of course, were given a head-start and placed on third base. The Little Leaguer won; the rocks never left the bag. (Robert Spencer/The New York Times)
