(NYT88) SLIDELL, La. -- Oct. 26, 2005 -- STORMS-VOICES -- A'Jenne Williams, 11, has become the unofficial social director at a shelter in Slidell, La., in October 2005. Williams has become the unofficial source of uplift for the roughly 400 people living in this newly built auditorium, which hit a low point recently when an old man died on a cot. She is in the fourth grade. This is the third shelter her family has lived in since losing their Slidell apartment and all their possessions to Hurricane Katrina. But even after school and on weekends, she never stops moving. (Ting-Li Wang/The New York Times)
