(NYT35) CHURCHILL, Manitoba -- Oct. 9, 2005 -- ARCTIC-COMPETITION-2 -- A view of a railroad in Churchill, Manitoba in July 2005. Though the environmental effects of Arctic warming have gotten most of the attention, the thaw is shaping a parallel story of economic and geopolitical competition. A quarter of the world's undiscovered petroleum deposits lie in the Arctic. So do lucrative shipping routes, new destinations for cruise ships and teeming commercial fisheries of cod, herring, turbot and shrimp. Who owns it all is unclear, and many nations and private interests are jostling for the front of the line. (Tyler Hicks/The New York Times)
