(12/8/2005) Deborah Lewis, 50, has a smoke outside the tent she shares with her mother and a friend in The Village Dec. 8, 2005, in Pass Christian, Mississippi. The tent city is one of three set up in recent weeks along the Mississippi coast, makeshift villages that have emerged for some of the many families that, as winter approaches, are still homeless because of Hurricane Katrina. The tent city in Pass Christian was built on a muddy gravel lot that used to be a Little League field.(Ozier Muhammad/The New York Times)
