(NYT25) HOLLAND, The Netherlands -- Feb. 25, 2005 -- BERLIN-ARCHITECTURE -- The exterior of the Dutch embassy in Holland. Because it was outside the city center, Rem Koolhaas's Dutch embassy faced few building restrictions. When the capital of a united Germany returned to Berlin, foreign missions also moved here from Bonn. And since most prewar embassies had been abandoned or destroyed, many nations took up the challenge: eager to display their modernity, they recruited leading architects to come up with dashing designs. As a result, in this otherwise conformist city, foreign embassies now display much of the best contemporary architecture that the new Berlin can offer. (Gunter Schneider/The New York Times)
