(NYT14) BALA CYNWYD, Pa. Jan. 24, 2005 -- SCI-WOMEN-PREGNANCY -- Janet Golden at her home in Bala Cynwyd, Jan. 19, 2005. Golden, a medical historian, recalls an era when pregnant women were encouraged to have a cocktail. As fetal alcohol syndrome became a cautionary warning for pregnant women everywhere, that stopped. Golden has written a book describing the history of the syndrome. Despite greater awareness of it, and even overreaction by some women, the disorder continues to be diagnosed in large numbers.
