(NYT25) CULVER CITY, Calif. -- Feb. 22, 2005 -- BLOCK-WEETZIE-BAT -- Author Francesca Lia Block at her home in Culver City, Calif., in February. Block is the wildly successful author of the "Weetzie Bat" young adult book series, and she has just won a lifetime achievement award from the American Library Association. The books, set in the grittier precincts of Los Angeles, deal with AIDS, drugs, anorexia, and Block is part of a new wave of young adult authors have been writing about racier, darker subject matter.
