(NYT31) WASHINGTON -- Feb. 20, 2005 -- BABIES-SCREEN-3 --Dr. R. Rodney Howell, a professor of pediatrics at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, in his NIH office in Washington, Feb. 10, 2005. An influential federal advisory group is expected to recommend in the next few weeks that all newborn babies be screened for 29 rare medical conditions, from the well known, like sickle cell anemia, to diseases so obscure that they are known to just a handful of medical specialists and a few dozen devastated families. Howell is the chairman of both the committee that wrote the report and the federal advisory group. (Marty Katz/The New York Times)
