(NYT24) BALTIMORE -- Feb. 8, 2005 -- BALTIMORE-MURDERS -- Sgt. Mike Fries, center, of the Baltimore City Police Department, questions young men in one of the city's roughest neighborhoods, Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005. After trending downward from a record 353 in 1993, homicides in Baltimore have ticked back up since 2002, hitting 278 last year. And last month, the city posted its bloodiest January since 1973, with 32 killings. Once again, Baltimore is flirting with the title of deadliest big city in the nation, recording a homicide rate three times greater than Los Angeles, five times greater than New York.(Steve Ruark/The New York Times)
