(NYT6) MULLATHIVU, Sri Lanka -- Jan. 4, 2005 -- ASIA-QUAKE-SRI-LANKA-1 -- A church in the town of Mullathivu, in northern Sri Lanka's Wanni District, an area held by Tamil rebels, lies destroyed, Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005. The church and surrounding structures were damaged in last week's tsunami. Hoping to facilitate rescue and the distribution of aid, the Tamil Tiger rebels and the government have put aside their fighting giving some people hope that the prolonged insurgency could end peacefully.
