(NYT17) NOVI, Mich. -- March 5, 2005 -- PAIN-MEDICATION-2 -- Barbara Birmingham exercising in Novi, Mich., on Feb. 25, 2005. Birmingham exercises regularly and takes ibuprofen for arthritis pain. The Vioxx pills she used to take, she said, were a "godsend." Many patients are trying alternative treatments, including acupuncture, herbal remedies, massage, exercise magnets and diet. The withdrawal of Vioxx has led some to consider how much risk they are willing to take to relieve their pain. (Fabrizio Costantini/The New York Times)
