(NYT24) QATIF, Saudi Arabia -- March 1, 2005 -- SAUDI-SHIITES -- A Shiite man and girl watch a reenactment of the circa 680 battlefield decapitation of Hussein, the Prophet Muhammed's grandson, in Qatif, Saudi Arabia, on Feb. 19, 2005. The Shiite Muslim minority in this kingdom once marked their Ashura holiday furtively out of fear of stirring the wrath of the religious establishment. The fact that Shiites no longer feel the need to hide reflects a combination of important changes here and elsewhere in the region. (Mohamed El-Dakhakhny/The New York Times)
