(NYT61) NEW YORK -- May 20, 2005 -- OPERA-CONDUCT -- Conductor Atsushi Yamada rehearsing with members of New York City Opera for an upcoming performance in Japan on Friday, May 13, 2005. Yamada began as an unpaid intern. Yamada's rise to the podium is a testament to the spirit of artistic entrepreneurship: he helped raise millions of dollars for City Opera's foray to his native land, its first overseas tour in almost 20 years. On Sunday, May 22, Yamada will be on the podium in Tokyo, conducting Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." (Ting-Li Wang/The New York Times)
