(NYT11) CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- April 23, 2005 -- MARIACHI-SCHOOLS-2 -- Jorge Geraldo, holding a guitarron, sang recently at a backyard reception after a baptism in Chula Vista, Calif., on April 8, 2005 He was accompanied by mariachi students from Chula Visa High School. Some high schools have forsaken John Philip Sousa marches at halftime in favor of Mariachi bands. Across the country, more than 500 public schools now offer mariachi as part of the curriculum, said Daniel Sheehy, a mariachi expert and director of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings in Washington.
