(NYT33) SAIPAN, Northern Marianas Islands -- June 15, 2004 -- SAIPAN-REMEMBER -- Former U.S Marine, John Rich, 86, left, and former Japanese constructing engineer, Takeo Sato, 85, outside the Kalabera cave in Saipan in the Northern Marianas Islands in June. Rich found Sato hiding in the cave in July 1944 during WWII. Sato was Rich's prisoner and translator and afterwards they became lifelong friends. After a week of Atlantic D-Day television specials culminating with the June 6 gathering of heads of government in Normandy, many Saipan veterans and their supporters gathered here Tuesday said that, just as in World War II, the American popular mind relegates the Pacific theater to second-class status.
