(NYT35) BRYCE NATIONAL PARK, Utah -- June 17, 2004 -- SUMMER-SERVICE-2 -- Sierra Club volunteers Carolyn Mansfield, left, and her mother Joan Mansfield working at Bryce National Park, Utah, June 13th, 2004. Participants in this service vacation camp and work in the park for a week. For some people, a dream vacation involves no labor harder than balancing a paper umbrella on the rim of a tall glass. But, under the auspices of the Sierra Club and accompanied by a group leader, six volunteers, most of them eminently sensible-seeming people, paid $395, plus airfare, for the privilege of spending a week performing back-breaking or mind-numbing tasks to help fix up the park.
