(NYT33) SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- May 29, 2004 -- WWII-SOUVENIRS -- Marty Connor with a Japanese flag captured during World War II at his home on Syracuse, N.Y., on May 27, 2004. On Memorial Day, Connor will be remembering his time as an 18-year-old marine on Iwo Jima and the more than 6,000 Americans who never made it back from the 36-day siege there. But he'll also be thinking of something else: all those slivers of the past, now gathering dust in attic chests and bureau drawers and moth-eaten duffel bags and his final mission to send them home.
