(NYT56) NEW YORK -- May 25, 2004 -- NY-BURGLARY-DNA-3 -- Bloody evidence at a temporary forensics lab in Bellevue Hospital Center in November 2003. Highly sensitive DNA analysis may be done here by year's end.New York's Chief Medical Examiner's Office plans to open a new lab to test hundreds of DNA samples a day from nearly every crime scene, including burglaries and stolen cars, to find DNA samples previously considered too miniscule to collect. The office then plans to match the DNA against a database of convicted offenders and DNA profiles from other crime scenes. (Mike Appleton/The New York Times)
