(NYT78) NAIROBI, Kenya -- Aug. 24, 2004 -- KENYA-LAND-4 -- Masai tribesmen demanding restitution of their ancestral lands in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, August 24, 2004. Plainclothed police with assault rifles arrived to stop Masai from walking to the British High Commission to protest a land treaty signed in early 1900s. Kenyan authorities are responding to recent land seizures by Masai tribesmen by cracking down on the tribe. Riot police have moved onto the ranches, guns blazing, to remove the men the government calls "invaders.'' The number of Masai arrested in recent days now exceeds 150.
