(NYT35) FLORENCE, Italy -- May 3, 2004 -- FLORENCE-CORPSES -- Ottaviano de Medici in front of the Medici Chapel in Florence, Italy on Monday, May 3, 2004. Known historically for writing checks to Michelangelo, the Medici, surely one of Italy's most celebrated clans, have aired some dirty laundry lately as a handful of their latter-day descendants have fallen into something of a minor family spat. Scientists in Florence are planning to exhume the remains of 49 Medici corpses this month for a wide-ranging forensic study. One branch of the family was invited to take part; a second branch was not, but its ancestors are among those being exhumed. (Sandro Michahelles/The New York Times)
