(NYT29) BERLIN -- May 18, 2004 -- GERMANY-ASPARAGUS-4 -- A stand in Berlin promotes white asparagus from Beelitz in May. On weekend mornings at this time of year, the traffic backs up alarmingly at the Beelitz exit on the Berlin-Leipzig autobahn. For about two months -- from late April until June 24, the feast of St. John the Baptist -- Berliners go bonkers over asparagus, especially the white asparagus grown in the sandy soil in Beelitz, Germany. They call the annual season of madness spargelzeit, or asparagus time. (Otto Pohl/The New York Times)
