(NYT27) GANDOLA, Mozambique -- May 17, 2004 -- RATS-MINE-DETECTION-1 -- A Gambian giant pouched rat is fed a banana by a trainer after it successfully identified the position of a landmine in a field where several defused landmines are buried at the Apopo training project in Gandola, Mozambique. The rat may be as good a mine detector as man or nature has yet devised. (Joao Silva/The New York Times)
