(NYT57) LONG BEACH, Calif. -- May 6, 2004 -- IRAQ-PRISON-VOICES-3 -- Ban Al-Wardi, an immigration attorney in Long Beach, Calif., May 5, 2004, says she was suspicious of the Bush administration's motives in Iraq from the outset. "Iraq has been colonized before. Iraq has been occupied before,"says al-Wardi. "We have had our people punished, dehumanized, portrayed as animals and people who don't know how to create our own democracy." Interviews with a dozen Iraqi-Americans in Los Angeles and Detroit, two of the nation's largest Iraqi emigre communities, reveal a split on the long-range prospects for their native land. (J. Emilio Flores/The New York Times) *Eds. Note. Ban Al-Wardi is the daughter of Hanaa al-Wardi, as seen in NYT41 also sent May 6th.
