(NYT39) PEARL RIVER, N.Y. -- October 6, 2003 -- EXCESS-INVENTORY-2 -- Retailers and their suppliers do not bury retail marketing mistakes; instead, they turn to companies that specialize in taking what is politely called excess inventory off their hands. The practitioners tend to be held in the same regard as a funeral home: necessary, perhaps, but no one's destination of choice. Companies like Active International, based in the Pearl River, N.Y., are having a harder time capitalizing on retailers' mistakes, because tough times have taught many retailers to make fewer of them.
