(NYT41) SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- October 27, 2003 -- CALIF-SCENE -- Raging wildfires fanned by hot Santa Ana winds continued to consume hundreds of thousands of acres of Southern California scrubland Monday, forcing thousands of people, including some heavily populated coastal areas, to flee their homes. Anne Loeffler, 88, examines the wreckage of the home on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, which burned to the ground in the wildfire. Loeffler lived in the house for 41 years.
