(NYT5) NEW YORK -- Oct. 25, 2003 -- NY-ARCHDIOCESE-CUTBACKS -- The Archdiocese of New York has embarked on the most sweeping reorganization in its 153-year history, an overhaul that is likely to lead to the closing of churches, a fewer number of Masses and the redeployment of priests. Worshipers attended celebrated Mass on Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Our Lady of Victory, in Lower Manhattan. Though the church drew few to weekend services during the survey period, it has five full-time priests. (Suzanne DeChillo/The New York Times)
