(NYT46) NEW YORK -- October 1, 2003 -- CAGED-ANIMALS -- Polar bears, lions, tigers, cheetahs and other wide-ranging carnivores do so poorly in captivity that zoos should either drastically improve their conditions or stop keeping them altogether, biologists from Oxford University report Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, in the journal Nature.
