(NYT40) NEW YORK -- March 4, 2003 -- KOREA-U.S. -- Senior Pentagon officials said Tuesday, March 4, 2003, that two dozen long-range bombers would be sent to Guam, within easy striking range of North Korea, after President Bush said that if diplomacy failed, he might be forced to turn to military options to prevent the North from making nuclear weapons. Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the New York Times on Feb. 26, 2003. On Tuesday, Myers called a Saturday encounter in skies over the Sea of Japan "a well-planned operation by the North Koreans", referring four North Korean fighter jets intercepting an unarmed U.S. Air Force RC-135S, which was on a surveillance mission over the Sea of Japan.
