(NYT26) NEW YORK -- March 12, 2003 -- NIGHT-MUSIC-THEATER-REVIEW -- Stephen Sondheim says he thinks of his works for the lyric theater as musicals, not operas. But in a recent interview he wryly suggested that "A Little Night Music'' his latest production, verges "dangerously on the edge of operetta.'' It takes a cast of verbally adroit singing actors to bring off this score, and opera singers tend to be obsessed with making pretty sounds and spinning silken legatos. Jeremy Irons as Fredrik Egerman and Juliet Stevenson as Desiree Armfeldt in "A Little Night Music,'' at the New York State Theater on March 7, 2003. (Sara Krulwich/The New York Times)
